説明 | Stepney Green Underground Station (District and Hammersmith & City Lines), 13 July 2024. The station was built by the Whitechapel & Bow Railway and opened in June 1902 at the same time as the W&BR; this was a joint District Railway (DR) and London, Tilbury and Southend Railway (LT&SR) line, connecting the District and Metropolitan Railway’s joint station at Whitechapel with the LT&SR near Bow. This enabled DR services to run to Upminster (the present terminus) but also to as far afield as Southend-on-Sea! Unsurprisingly, the latter service only survived to September 1905. Although jointly funded by the DR and LT&SR, the former’s architect, Harry Wharton Ford, designed Stepney Green station. It was not until 1950 that ownership was transferred wholly to London Transport. Since many original features survive, it is somewhat surprising that it is not a listed building.Although the Metropolitan Railway never served Stepney Green, in March 1936 the London Passenger Transport Board (LPTB) extended what was the Metropolitan Line’s Hammersmith & City services (though branded simply as the Metropolitan Line) from Aldgate East to Barking. It was rebranded the Hammersmith & City Line in 1990.Pictured is the station building. |
