説明 | Ferrous sulfate (FeSO4) tablets are used to combat anemia, being one of the most widely used medications. It is estimated that roughly 7% of all foreign bodies aspirated into the airways are medicinal pills. They may be found whole or as small or large fragments. Here we see fragments of the pill, which have a golden-crystalline and fibrilar structure. Smaller granules, probably already metabolized, are present. Some may be located within macrophages or giant cells. it has been suggested that the iron pill fragments resemble Gamna-Gandy bodies. This material is strongly stained with an iron stain (Perls Prussian blue stain), as can be seen in the in the photo above on the right. The long, thin granules, if they are the only finding, can be mistaken for ferruginous bodies.Images contributed by Dr. Sanjay Mukhopadhyay - @smlungpathguy |
