説明... here are the words written over ten years ago, as Ruth told what she remembered of her grandfather, the colorful and notorious Constable Pogue ..."The granddaughters are Ruth Blair, secretary of the First United Methodist Church of Johnson City, Texas, Joy Feuge, pianist for the First United Methodist Church of Johnson City, Texas and Marie Leach who infrequently darkens the door of the First United Methodist Church of Johnson City, Texas. Ruth remembered Constable Pogue as a very stern man (GET YOUR ELBOWS OFF THE TABLE--SIT UP STRAIGHT!) and believed that he operated out of Goldthwaite, Texas. Cousin Amy, however, is the family historian and all pertinent data will have to wait until we can get in touch with her.""Time passes, the trail of Constable Pogue is growing cold and still no word from Amy. Joy says it wasn't Goldthwaite it was one of those other county seats with a gold name.""Late night comes, sleep doesn't. The creative juices are flowing and still no word from Amy. A quick look at the Texas Highway Map and there it is, the only other gold town in Texas--Goldsmith in far West Texas. OH BOY!. That's got to be it. Studying the old tintype carefully the sketch begins showing Constable Pogue hot on the trail of a West Texas fugitive. Originally the man-hunter in this composition was supposed to be a certain Police Chief in San Marcos, but that's another story. The features of Constable Pogue are assembled in the composition and the features of another well known member of the First United Methodist Church of Johnson City, Texas are provided for the fugitive and VIOLA! it is done.""Next day Joy says for sure Constable Pogue operated out of Gholson, Texas, a small town near Waco from where he would serve warrants and then transport prisoners to the county seat.""HEY! WHAT! DON'T LOOK AT ME LIKE THAT! This is the way history gets itself written and we're still waiting to hear from Amy."... so you see how history plays itself out, but no matter Gholson or Goldsmith, my poor wretched grandfather Billy Bob Throckmorton theIIIrd, got his self arrested on a bum warrant for livestock theft, just because he made a simple mistake of identification. Of course, it would have been more convenient all the way around if Aunt Amy had got her stuff together before my grandfather and Constable Pogue had to make that long journey to far West Texas.... my friend Mifflin In the Houston area doesn't do Flickr, so can't comment, however I'll post his most recent Email ... (I'm sure the kisses were meant for Sherry, but the I'm talking about my wife Sherry; his wife is named Sharon too and I didn't want to get her all excited unnecessarily.)... the Email: Now that wasn't a very nice thing to say about Marie Leach, especially if she is a Methodist. I've always enjoyed your method of fleshing outa story with your illustrations. You add it all. Drama, amusement, color, a certain amount of truism. And to emphasize the fate of the presumedperp, there is a whole flock of buzzards in waiting, both in flight and clinging to the edge of the cliff. The culprit looks like a meaty treat at that. Oh yes. I forgot to inform you that Billy Bob Throckmorton III was hanged before a crowd of 383 (officially counted) cheering citizens at Twisted Branch Gulch for cattle and horse rustling on August 12, 1883. My sincere condolences. He was a good man. Just had too much of a penchantfor quality horse flesh that wasn't his. Thank God he was able to sow his oats prior to that fateful day, or the Great Artist, Billy R. Strain of Kerrville, Texas wouldn't have existed. Like Granddad, like Grandson. There always has been a bit of larceny in both. Just goes to show it is in the jeans, and should have stayed there. Love and Kisses, Mifflin.... thank you, Mifflin, for all those astute announcements and updates, all deeply appreciated. I will make this comment on the buzzards. When I was a very little boy, my grandfather, the ill-fated Billy Bob Throckmorton, the III rd told me a bedtime story about them buzzards which always followed Constable Pogure around, even on that long journey to far away West Texas. He said then the official bird of Texas was the turkey buzzard, because theY kept the hills and plains so clean of organic litter, they soared above the earth and could smell a dead carcass for over a hunnert miles away and then lead the flock right to it. But they was even smarter than that, they came to be psychic about when a death was going to occur and so they sort of adopted Constable Pogue as being a steady meal ticket, because wherever he went, dead bodies seem to be strung out along the way. You can see in the historical replication the buzzards have followed the constable all the way from Gholson in Central Texas to far West Texas. They even gained weight on the journey.
