| 説明 | Established in 1912, Custer State Park, located in the Black Hills, has natural landscapes that rival those in many national parks. The park includes 71,000 acres (287 square kilometers), which varies from rolling grassland to coniferous forests to sharp rock pinnacles in the Black Hills. The park was historically part of the lands of the Lakota, which was claimed by the United States and taken from the tribe in 1876 during the Black Hills War. In 1980, the seizure of the land from the Lakota by the United States Government was ruled as an illegal land seizure by the United States Supreme Court, which awarded the tribe over $100 million in restitution. However, the money has sat, collecting interest in a bank account since that time, as the tribe would rather have their ancestral lands back, rather than being given money. The park itself is a beautiful natural landscape, which gives an idea as to how the land came to be valued as sacred by the indigenous people. Driving the Needles Highway, the varied terrain of the park's Black Hills section can be observed, passing rocky outcroppings, stone pinnacles, tree-covered mountains, and beautiful lakes. |
