説明 | The Sugar Loaf and the Amphitheatre in Hallett Cove Conservation Park. This important park in suburb Adelaide on St Vincent’s Gulf has been declared a Geological Monument by the Geolo0gicalsociety of Australia and placed on the South Australian Heritage Register for its educational and scientific significance. In 1877 a striated glacial pavement was discovered here. In 1893 a further scientific exploration showed that about 290 million years ago in the Permian era an ice sheet covered the area. As the ice later melted a basin was filled with melt water and stones from the glaciation era. About 250 million years ago the Permian layers were removed by erosion. Over the millennium erosional forces have removed sand and silt revealing a rounded amphitheatre with red layers which were the bottom of the melt water lake. A more resistant remnant has been named the Sugar Loaf because of its shape. Signage says it took 6,000 years to erode the Sugar Loaf. The last glacial age here was about 15,000 years ago and the park has a “Badlands” look because of the erosion. |
