説明 | Established in 1929, Badlands National Park is located at the boundary between two levels of the Northern Prairie, which has eroded over millennia into buttes and pinnacles, as the sediment and underlying sedimentary rock has been eroded away by the Cheyenne River and White River and their tributaries, creating a rugged, beautiful, and difficult to traverse landscape. The park was historically the home of the indigenous Lakota and Sioux people, who were forced onto a reservation, which included the modern-day park, in 1868. The park was part of the Oglala Sioux reservation until 1889, when the Second Treaty of Fort Laramie was unilaterally broken by the United States Government and the modern-day park, along with much of the surrounding land, was confiscated. The park was established as the Badlands National Monument in 1929, and became a National Park in 1978. The park today is jointly administered by the National Park Service and the Oglala Sioux, who were given co-management of part of the park in the late 20th Century.Though unsuitable for settlement and difficult to traverse, the badlands, named for both of these attributes, is a beautiful geologic formation, full of cliffs and hills that are comprised of beautiful, colorful layers of rocks and sediment, rugged, sharp edges in some places and smooth surfaces in others, and very obvious markings from water erosion, which continues to alter the landscape. |
