説明Emily, known as 'Red Em' or 'Red Emma of Southwark' in her day, was my father's aunt (his dad's sister). We used to visit her when I was a kid - I remember a pretty forbidding cockney matriarch, usually shouting at my dad - he loved her and was immensely proud of her and credited her for his curiosity about life, his love for books and all of his successes. She gave him comics and magazines to read and politicised him thoroughly. She was a follower of Wal Hannington, a Communist who led the National Unemployed Workers Movement in the thirties (here's a terrific photo of her throwing her hat in the air outside a court in 1925, from Hannington's autobiography). The caption reads:"Here's Mrs Emily Rothery, the 59-year-old widow from Long-Lane, Southwark, who spoke up for barrow boys at an inquiry into a proposal that the LCC should compulsorily buy 13.5 acres at the Elephant. To the Ministry of Housing inspector she explained: "I ain't a barrister, I ain't a solicitor. I just come for the poor boys with the barrows. They couldn't come. They're busy. I'm just an Elephant girl who wants to see them fairly treated."The cutting was in a frame at mum and dad's for years but the recent epic flood left it soaked so I've scanned it sharpish. The back of the cutting (on the right) is almost as interesting. That's Birkenhead middleweight Pat McAteer, on his sad return from a fight in South Africa in which his opponent died. So that helps me date the cutting to May 1957 - the fight took place on 4 May in that year. Dad always said this was from the South London Press, but there's a suggestion in the sports diary piece that it might be from 'The Star'. Was there a London paper called 'The Star' in the fifities? And here's a two-part note from my dad about the days Aunt Em used to take him and his siblings hopping (with pics): part one and part two.
