| 説明 | Built in 1931, this Art Deco-style building was designed by Gilbert Stanley Underwood to serve as Omaha Union Station. In its time, Art Deco was actually known as "Modern" or "Moderne", as it was a modern departure from earlier styles, as demonstrated by the contrast between the two stations. The name "Art Deco" was applied to the movement later, in 1966-1968, when it was first published in print, and eventually adopted as an official term endorsed by historians in the late 1960s.The building features a white terra cotta exterior with geometric and stylized motifs, large window bays, decorative sculptures, and has a main entrance off the 10th Street viaduct, which is elevated above several rail lines on the south side of Downtown Omaha. The building's facade features rich details, which are revealed by the contrast of light and shadow, rather than by pigmented glazing. The station contrasts with the former Burlington Train Station to the south across the tracks, which was constructed only two years prior, but demonstrates a much more conservative design in the Classical Revival style. The current shed-like one-story Omaha Amtrak Station stands next to the Burlington Station, demonstrating the decline in passenger rail travel in the United States during the 20th Century. The Durham museum opened as the Western Heritage Museum in 1975, and was originally located elsewhere in Omaha. The museum acquired Omaha Union Station in the 1990s, and the building was rehabilitated to house the museum. Upon the opening of the museum in 1997, it was renamed for philanthropists and supporters of the museum Charles and Margre Durham, who had contributed significant funding to the building’s rehabilitation. Omaha Union Station was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1971, and designated a National Historic Landmark in 2016. Today, the building remains the home of the Durham Museum. |
