| 説明 | Hammersmith Underground Station District and Piccadilly Lines), 13 April 2024. In September 1874 the Metropolitan District Railway (commonly known as the District Railway – DR) opened a station here as the terminus of the DR’s western extension from Earl’s Court. It became a through station in 1877 when the DR was extended further westwards to meet the London & South Western Railway (LSWR) at Ravenscourt Park from whence DR services worked over LSWR tracks to Richmond. In December 1906 the Great Northern, Piccadilly and Brompton Railway (commonly known as the Piccadilly Railway) opened with Hammersmith as its western terminus from Finsbury Park. The DR’s Resident Architect Harry Wharton Ford rebuilt the station to cater for both railways. In July 1932 the Piccadilly Line extended further westwards and the DR’s Hammersmith station at platform level was completely rebuilt and enlarged by Charles Holden who also built an additional entrance building but the 1906 DR entrance building/ticket hall was retained. However, in the early 1990’s the station buildings and platform buildings were demolished and rebuiltbeing incorporated into a shopping centre. The architects were Minale Tattersfield who salvaged the tiling from the façade of the Ford 1906 building and re-erected it in the main ticket hall. It shows the station and railway name and the lines served. Pictured are the platforms with 'butterfly' canopies and 'streamlined' waiting rooms reflecting Charles Holden's innovative Underground stations. |
