説明 | Built in 1901, this Romanesque Revival-style building was originally known as Alumni Hall, and was constructed to serve as a gymnasium, drill hall, and as a student union, being the first home of the University of Kentucky’s basketball program, as well as student clubs, campus events, including dances, and physical education classes. During the Spanish Flu Pandemic in 1918, the building served as a makeshift campus hospital. The building was expanded during the 1930s using funding provided by the New Deal-era Works Progress Administration (WPA), and was renamed in the early 20th Century to Barker Hall, after the university’s second president, Henry Stites Barker, and Buell Armory after Kentucky-born Union Civil War General, Don Carlos Buell. The building features a red brick exterior, a rough-hewn stone base, stone trim, an asymmetrical front facade with two towers of different heights, sporting pyramidal hipped roofs, roman arched bays, one-over-one windows, a neotraditional-style stairwell addition on the east side of the building, roman lattice motif spandrel panels, hipped roofs on the gymnasium spaces on the east and west sides of the south wing, and front entrance doors recessed behind arched openings. The building today houses the ROTC programs and financial offices of the University of Kentucky. |
