| 説明 | Fresh mangosteen (foreground) and durian (background) on display at a fruit stall in Singapore's Chinatown district. I was expecting more crowds and much more bright lights and illuminations, especially in view of the ongoing Chinese Lantern festival but was surprised to find the atmosphere very subdued overall. There was no one in any of the scores of shops either. Same case as in Chinatown KL- it seems to have never recovered post Covid. Or it may be the overall disillusionment with China due to their expansionist policies worldwide or the faltering Chinese economy. There were some mostly Chinese tourists walking about, but no one seemed to be buying anything or even talking selfies for that matter. Singapore Chinatown is an ethnic enclave located within the Outram district in the Central Area of Singapore. Featuring distinctly Chinese cultural elements, Chinatown has had a historically concentrated ethnic Chinese population. (Singapore, Sept. 2023) |
