説明 | the Molokan Church. South Australia began as the “Paradise of Dissent” for those who did not follow The Church of England as the established faith. That is why SA attracted various Presbyterian sects, more than three Methodist sects, Congregationalists, Churches of Christ and Baptists. In more recent times our immigrants have brought their various faiths to SA including Islam, Buddhism, Hinduism and others. In the 19th century SA attracted many Lutherans, some Quakers, Unitarians, Plymouth Brethren and other lesser known sects. The Moravians were one of the most unique and distinctive groups but even in recent times SA has attracted some seldom heard about religious groups. One of the recent, but little known Christian groups, is the Russian Molokan Spiritualist Church which split from the Russian Orthodox Church. Like Methodists etc. they were dissenters in the eyes of the Russian Orthodox Church. They mainly existed in the Crimea in the 1400 and 1500s as they rejected icons, and many Orthodox traditions. These early Molokans re-emerged as a new church in 1780 and their fate was set. The Russian Emperor exiled Molokan believers to Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan in 1839 so that they could not influence Russian peasants and serfs. At the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century the Molokans feared the signs of Russian revolution and Molokans relocated to California, especially the San Francisco region. Today there are more Molokans in California (25,000) than there are in Russia (20,000). Then in the 1960s and 1970s some Molokans resettled in Australia, Canada and Mexico. Today most Molokans in Australia are located in Adelaide with a few in Perth. Their main leader/spiritualist guru (they do not believe in priests a bit like the Quakers) and church is located in MacDonald Park near Angle Vale. Because of objections by neighbours the Playford City Council in 2003 granted permission for a church so long as it was located 53 metres from the road! There is also a Molokan church/meeting house at Greenwith and another at Kudla nearer Gawler. In 2012 they were granted an acreage at Worlds End north of Eudunda for a Molokan cemetery. This was given by the Goyder Regional Council. It is adjacent to the Upper Bright Lutheran cemetery which has only 24 headstones. But in future the Molokans will have some land here for their own cemetery in South Australia. |
