説明 | Franklin Square. Governor Macquarie laid out a plan for Hobart town in 1811 when he visited the location. He left a square or park in what is now Franklin Square. He left this for perhaps a church or as it happened the second of the three Government Houses built in Hobart in 1817. The poorly built brick and wood structure had a sandstone extension added between 1829 and 1831. It later became a mustering square for convicts and residents and the Van Diemans Land parliament was also housed in the second government House from 1831 to 1841. After transportation of convicts ceased in 1853 it became a public park and the second Government House was demolished in 1858 as the third Government House in the Queens Domain was by then in use. In 1860 a new Court House was built in beautiful sandstone facing both Macquarie Street and what is now Franklin Square with the old one on what is now the square being demolished in 1858. In 1860 a public fund raising movement raised £1,000 to erect a memorial statue to Lieutenant Governor Sir John Franklin who was also an ill-fated polar explorer. The Hobart City Council took over control of Franklin Square in 1923. |
