| 説明 | Built in 1896-1897, this Richardsonian Romanesque Revival-style building was designed by Franzheim, Giesey, and Faris for the congregation of Vance Memorial Presbyterian Church, replacing the earlier Frank Walters Road House on the same site. The church was funded by James N. Vance, part-owner of Dewey, Vance, and Company, a bar iron manufacturing firm founded in 1861, and was built as a memorial to Vance’s parents. The church was incorporated in 1897 as a Presbyterian Church, serving the growing Woodsdale and Edgwood districts east of Downtown Wheeling. The building was expanded in 1913 with the addition of a chapel and an education wing, designed by Edward B. Franzheim, in 1956, the present educational wing was added to the east of the original church, and in 1966, the sanctuary was expanded to the east, with the original octagonal roof being extended with a hipped roof extension and a sandstone arcade. The building features a rough-hewn stone exterior, roman arched bays and arcades with cylindrical columns, roman arched stained glass windows, a twelve-sided tower with a conical red terra cotta roof and finial, the remaining walls of the original octagonal nave of the sanctuary, which was extended to the east with a hipped roof in the 1960s, multiple gable ends, and an educational building with a red terra cotta tile gabled roof at the south end of the building, built in the 1950s. The building is a contributing structure in the National Road Corridor Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1993. |
