説明 | Erected in 1928, this monument is one of twelve monuments that stand along the National Old Trails Road between Maryland, just outside Washington, DC, and California, which were funded by the Daughters of the American Revolution as a memorial to the pioneer women who moved west along the road towards the western frontier. The monument is meant to honor the spirit of Pioneer women during the westward expansion of the United States, and was designed and sculpted by August Leimbach, with the statues being funded and organized by the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution. The statue today is one of 11 that are positioned to face west, with the Maryland statue alone facing east, towards Washington, DC, and is a notable feature along the National Road Corridor at Wheeling Park. The monument is a contributing resource in the National Road Corridor Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1993. |
