説明 | Built in the late 1300s or early 1400s, this castle was built by the Venetians, who then ruled the island of Santorini, to protect the civilian population of the northwest corner of the island, and was known as Apano Meria. The original site of the town’s settlement, the promontory allowed for natural defenses against enemy invaders and pirate raids, and was where the town was concentrated until the 1800s. The buildings that once stood on the promontory were gradually felled by earthquakes in the 1600s, 1700s, and 1800s, but the town’s main church was constructed on the promontory in the late 1800s, before being destroyed, along with the remaining guard tower and houses further down the hill, during the 1956 earthquake that devastated the island of Santorini. Today, some of the ruins are open to the public, while other areas, including the stone vaults that were once the rooms of cave houses on the hillside, and are similar in construction to those in use elsewhere in Oia, remain in ruins, a lasting vestige of the legacy of the island’s unstable and quite active geology. |
