| 説明 | Statue of St. Mary with child, coat of arms and inscription above the entrance of the church of the former Capuchin monastery in Cochem, Germany. The Capuchin monastery at Cochem was founded in 1623, though construction was only completed in the 1630s with significant donations by Johann Jacob von Eltz-Kempenich and his wife Maria Elisabeth von Metzenhausen as well contributions from neighbouring villages. The church of the monastery, dedicated in 1635 was destroyed during the Nine Years' War and rebuilt in the 1690s.During this rebuiding process, an inscription from 1627 was placed above the newly built portal of the church and supplemented with a statue of the Madonna and Child as well as the coat of arms of the Houses of Eltz and Metzenhausen. The inscription, now almost illegible due to weathering, is preserved in a 19th century publication: DEO TER OPTIMO, S(ANCTI) CRVCI, B(EATAE) M(ARIAE) VIRGINI, S S CLAVDIO ET FRANCISCO IN HONOREM HANC ECCLESIAM ET CONVENTVM SACRO ORDINI MINORVM CAPVCINORVM AEDIFICARI CVRAVERVNT STRENVVS ET PRAENOBILIS IOHANNES IACOB(VS) D(OMI)N(V)S AD ELZ-KEMPENICH ET IN HARDT, ELECTORIS TREVERENSIS ARCHIMARSCHALKVS, NEC NON PRAENOBILIS ET VIRTVOSA MARIA ELISABETTHA, DOMINA AD ELZ, NATA DE METZENHAVSEN, CO(N)IVGES 1627"[To the] threefold best God, the Holy Cross, the Blessed Virgin Mary, in honour of St. Claudius and St. Francis, this church and convent for the holy Order of Friars Minor Capuchin had been built by the strenous and most noble Johannes Jakob, Lord of Eltz-Kempenich and in Hart, Arch-Marshall of the Elector of Trier and also the most noble and virtuous Maria Elisabeth, Lady of Eltz, born of Metzenhausen, Spouses, 1627" |
