| 説明 | In the summer of 1963, at the magazine counter of our local Piggly Wiggly, I found a true treasure. There it was, a copy of Woman's Day Magazine - July 1963, its cover inviting an adventure: "Birds of America." Though merely10 cents, I knew this magazine would become a cherished memento of my childhood – a journal / diary in progress.As a young Girl Scout hoping to earn my bird badge, I was overjoyed with this purchase. Carefully, I tore out the bird insert and stapled it into a purple construction paper jacket. Thus began my mission: to document as many bird species as I could spot. Little did I realize, within those pages lay the beginning of a passion that would endure a lifetime.One bird stood out above the rest – the bobwhite. Its distinctive call sounded through the fields and forests of my Southern Georgia childhood, a constant appearance as I journeyed the backroads to town with my Papa Kalb. With each sighting, my granddad and I would exchange knowing glances, our voices joining in unison to mimic its unmistakable cry: "Bob whhiitte!"It was the bobwhite that served as my "Spark Bird," igniting within me a fascination for the world of birdwatching. Now, six decades later, as I leaf through the worn pages of this old magazine insert, I happily travel back to a time of childhood wonder and exploration. |
