説明Church of All Saints, Combeinteignhead Devon - Despite its closeness to the river Teign, the village name appears not to be derived from it: The 1086 Domesday Book says there were 13 manors with an area of 10 hides and the whole area was known as Combe, (a steep sided valley) with "Ten Hides", The church has ancient origins probably from pre 12c from which the font survives. www.flickr.com/gp/52219527@N00/THg6skEY53There are records of Bishop Bronescombe dedicating 2 altars here in 1259, the date the first recorded rector Sir Henry de Brattone was instituted. The earliest parts of the present building, thought to be the east wall of the south transept, may date from this period. The following century was a period of significant growth for the village. The dedication of the High Altar in 1339 by the Bishop of Waterford would likely have formed part of the regeneration When the Black Death decimated the country in 1348-49 farmers found easier land to work , and the village was all but abandoned until the end of the 15c, despite further work on the church in this time when the nave was extended with aisles during the late 14c & 15c and when the tower was probably added or remodeled Much of the five bay carved oak rood screen dates from c 1450. The 15c carved oak bench ends in the north transept belonging to the Carew family, are among the best in the country with many well known and obscure saints as well as wild men www.flickr.com/gp/52219527@N00/NhnX81sug9 , animals, www.flickr.com/gp/52219527@N00/321nzh1440 St George in armour spearing a dog-like dragon next to St Agnes with her lamb, www.flickr.com/gp/52219527@N00/s5Y909Q544 & St Catherine with her wheel symbol www.flickr.com/gp/52219527@N00/71670X77Q1in the north transept once the 15c Gregory Fokeray chantry, lie Gregory 1571 & Alice Hockmore d1613 under an arched altar tomb www.flickr.com/gp/52219527@N00/C0z63676C3 with fine memorial tablets of their grandson William 1626 www.flickr.com/gp/52219527@N00/vp6w7B53c5 & great grandson Gregory 1655 www.flickr.com/gp/52219527@N00/7G298Sausk nearby . At the beginning of the 16c there was further investment in the village in the form of new buildings and, other than the red sandstone almshouses built in 1620 by William Bourchin, the architecture of the south core of the village where the church stands remains largely unchanged since that time.Restorations took place in 1851 & 1887 the latter by architect Robert Medley Fulford at a cost of £1,300, when a new organ was erected, the old seats replaced by solid oak benches, the aisles and chancel floor repaved, the nave and aisles refloored with wood blocks, the chancel screen cleaned and restored and a new oak pulpit erected: .Prior to the 16c Reformation, the church was thought to have been originally dedicated to the Virgin Mary, but afterwards this was forgotten in the official records at least, and It was not until 1986 that it was officially dedicated to All SaintsThe bells re-hung in 1897 at a cost of £100, are mainly from the Whitechapel foundry.
