| 説明 | Built in the 1200s, this Byzantine-style church is the oldest still-operating church in the city of Rhodes. The building ceased operation as a church in 1522 after the Ottoman takeover of Rhodes, and served as a small mosque, or mesgit, during the Ottoman period. The building features a stucco-clad exterior with a cylindrical drum below a dome, barrel vaulted roofs, roman arched windows, and a floor level that is sunken below the surrounding streets, as the ground level has risen since the building’s construction. The building was restored to use as a Greek Orthodox Church in the early 20th Century. The building is part of the Old Town of Rhodes, designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1988. |
