| 説明 | Built in the late 1300s, this Byzantine-style church, known as the Church of Agios Georgios, was constructed by the Knights Hospitaller as a votive church for the saint protector of the soldiers of Rhodes. The building served as a church until the Ottoman Empire conquered the island in 1522, and served as a small mosque until the early 20th Century. The building features a stone exterior with a cylindrical drum with blind arches below a red terra cotta tile dome, roman arched bays, buttresses at the west facade, and a portico on the north facade with arched openings. The building was restored to use as a Greek Orthodox Church during the early 20th Century. It is a part of the Old Town of Rhodes, designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1988. |
