説明 | Built circa 1500, this Byzantine-style church was originally the Agia Triada Church, or Holy Trinity Church, a Greek Orthodox Church. During the period of Ottoman rule between 1522 and 1912, the church was converted into a mosque, with the addition of a minaret, of which the base still stands, while the rest of the structure remained largely unchanged. Following the Italian takeover of the island in the early 20th Century, the church, along with much of the Old Town of Rhodes, was restored, which included the removal of the minaret and restoration of the building to once again function as a church. The building was damaged during an air raid during World War II, but was restored and reopened by the 1980s. The building features a stone exterior with an octagonal drum, a red terra cotta tile roof, domes, the base of a minaret, and roman arched windows, and two intersecting naves to the south and west of the main dome. The building today serves as a Greek Orthodox Church, and is part of the Old Town of Rhodes, designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1988. |
