説明 | Built in the 1300s, this Gothic-style church was constructed as the home church of the Knights of St. John, part of the Knights Hospitaller. The building served as a church until 1522, when the Ottoman Empire began its occupation of Rhodes, after which it served as a mosque. The building once again became a church during the Italian Colonial period in the early 20th Century, and was the largest church in the Old City of Rhodes until it was destroyed, along with several buildings in the surrounding Jewish Quarter, by a bombing raid during World War II. The remains of the church feature gothic arched window openings, gothic arched vaults, stone walls, and a stone floor, with the ruins having been stabilized in the late 20th Century, and today serving as a public gathering space. The building is part of the Old Town of Rhodes, designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1988. |
