| 説明 | Built between 1309 and 1465 and repaired after an earthquake in 1481, the defensive walls of Rhodes have remained mostly unchanged since 1522, when the island was conquered from the Knights Hospitaller by the Ottoman Empire. The walls today demonstrate the transitional period between the Medieval and Renaissance eras, with some portions of the walls having been fortified against cannons during the early 1500s, and other sections maintaining their pre-cannon configurations. Today, the walls and multiple gates and towers within them remain mostly intact, surrounding the Old City of Rhodes, designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1988. |
