| 説明 | Built initially as a Byzantine Citadel in the 600s AD, this castle was rebuilt by the Knights Hospitaller in the 1300s to serve as their headquarters on the Island of Rhodes, and after the 1522 capture of the island by the Ottoman Empire, it became the seat of the Ottoman Empire’s administration on the island. The Medieval fortress was heavily damaged by a lightning strike that ignited a nearby gunpowder magazine in 1826, which caused the collapse of the upper levels of the fortress. Between 1937 and 1940, the castle was rebuilt to its circa 1400 appearance by the Italian Colonial government on the island. The restoration, carried out under the direction of Vittorio Mesturino, was done through a romanticist lens, and is considered to be inaccurate to the structure’s historical appearance. The building features a stone exterior with Gothic arched windows and doors, crenellated parapets, brackets and machicolations, a large central courtyard, and both rectilinear and rounded towers. The building today houses a historical museum, and is part of the Old Town of Rhodes, designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1988. |
