| 説明 | (screen capture video from the Grindavik web camera atop Thorbjörn)------------------------------------------------At 7:57 AM, local time, on Sunday, 14 January 2024, a fissure eruption started in southwestern Iceland's Reykjanes Peninsula, just northeast of the town of Grindavik. The fissure quickly lengthened and basaltic lava flows spread in multiple directions, including toward Grindavik. The lava flows were not permitted to flow entirely naturally - manmade earthen embankments diverted the lava on the north side of town. A lava flow from a smaller fissure next to the northern edge of Grindavik did destroy three homes.Effusive activity gradually decreased late on Sunday and into the next day. By Monday, 15 January 2024, few erupting centers remained.Update: the eruption ceased very early in the morning on Tuesday, 16 January 2024. |
