説明 | Northgate Street. Galloway House. Galloway is an estate in Scotland near Dumfries south of Glasgow. Galloway House was another house built for Simon Harvey around 1900. It is an Edwardian residence built of bluestone with sandstone quoins ( now painted) with window and door trims, elaborate rendered eaves brackets and mouldings, Queen Anne corner tower with shingled conical roof and a decorative veranda with timber columns. It has a castellated roofed bay window on the western side and matching castellated rectangular porch entryway. A notable owner was Alfred Lucas from around 1910 to the around 1932 when his widow also died. Sometime after, or at that time, James Murray Galloway took possession of 81 Northgate Street. He was born in 1870 and worked as a mine manager in Broken Hill and in Victoria. He married in Broken Hill in 1897. He was the husband of Edith and father of Ellie. He died at 81 Northgate Street in 1948. He named it Galloway House. His grandfather came to Sth Australia early and was a pioneer wheat farmer at Morphett Vale. He later established himself as a wheat trader at Port Pirie as it began to be developed in 1872 and where he became a magistrate in 1874. He died on New Year’s Eve 1876 and his three sons continued the wheat trading business. They had their own wharf at Port Pirie. One of his sons was the father of James Murray Galloway. |
