| 説明 | Built in 1912 for real estate investor Allen E. Klopp to a design by the locally-based firm of Colson & Hudson, the three-story building at 735 Main Street in downtown Buffalo, New York is a fairly typical example of the small-scale commercial architecture of its era. With its understated Greco-Roman ornamental motifs - note the cornice undergirded by paired iron brackets, the brick pilaster strips set between quartets of windows, and the frieze with pellet molding that crowns the third floor - this is an early example of the "Stripped Classicism" that in a few decades' time would become the de facto standard style for commercial, government, and institutional architecture. Described at the time of its completion as "one of the most attractive buildings in the upper Main Street section" of town now better known as Buffalo's Theater District, the building was initially home to a retail outlet of the United States Tire Company, which continued in business there until 1920. The building has been leased in whole or (usually) in part by a revolving door of different occupants in the years since, the more interesting of which include the local headquarters of Herbert Hoover's 1928 presidential campaign, the studios of radio station WEBR from 1930 until its move to the iconic, now-demolished "Broadcast House" on North Street five years later; the Frontier Office Supply Company from about 1950 until its acquisition by Service Office Supply in 1972; and the Stokes Seed Company, which leased the storefront at the time its Building Inventory Form was filed with the State Division for Historic Preservation in 1977. |
