説明 | In the background, built in 1923-1924, this 13-story Gothic Revival-style building was designed by Ronald Greene and built for L. B. Jackson, being the first skyscraper to be constructed in the city of Asheville. The building is a steel frame structure clad in buff brick with a limestone base, gothic arched bays at the first floor, decorative light fixtures flanking the main entrance door on Pack Square, metal-frame windows, terra cotta trim, including gargoyles, tracery, and decorative gothic motifs, recessed spandrel panels on the upper floors, a slender rectilinear English Gothic Revival-style tower with an open belfry at the top of the building, a hipped red terra cotta tile roof, terra cotta pinnacles, and a five-story rear annex, built in 1924, which stands along Market Street.In the foreground, built in 1925, this eight-story Romanesque Revival-style building was designed by Ronald Greene and built for W. H. Westall. The building features a brown brick exterior with orange terra cotta trim, six-over-one double-hung windows, engaged solomonic columns, a decorative trim surround at the first and second floors of the north facade, casement windows flanked by engaged columns on the second floor of the north facade, a decorative spandrel panel between the seventh and eighth floor windows, arched windows on the eighth floor of the north facade, a cornice with modillions, and a rooftop balustrade.The buildings are contributing structures in the Downtown Asheville Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979, and adjusted to its present size in 2011, and today, house various office tenants. |
