説明 | Built in 1868, this Carpenter Gothic Revival-style house was built by Captain Thomas Patton, a Confederate veteran of the Civil War, with Patton dubbing the house “Camp Patton.” Captain Patton served as the mayor of Asheville and as the Buncombe County Tax Collector during his time living at the house, as well as supporting women’s right to vote, hosting a meeting of suffragists at the house in 1894, including Helen Morris Lewis, which resulted in the creation of the North Carolina Equal Suffrage Association. The house remained owned by descendants of Patton, including the Parker family, into the early 21st Century. The house features a side-gable roof with decorative gingerbread bargeboard, six-over-six and six-over-one double-hung windows, a wooden clapboard-clad exterior, an oriel window over the front doorway, a two-story side ell, a front porch with rectilinear columns, wooden balustrades, and a hipped roof, a one-story bay window on the north facade, and a red brick base. The house is a contributing structure in the Chestnut Hill Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983. Today, the house serves as offices for a law firm. |
