| 説明 | Built in 1922, this Classical Revival-style building was designed by Ronald Greene to serve as an elementary school, replacing a late 19th Century public school that formerly stood on Orange Street. The school was named for Dr. Philander Priestly Claxton, a former educator and superintendent, and a lifelong advocate for public education. The building features a hollow clay tile structure, with a cast concrete exterior, two wings flanking a chamfered corner, a cornice with dentils, one-over-one double-hung windows, recessed spandrel panels between the second and third floors, a deeply recessed central bay with two fluted doric engaged columns, doric pilasters flanking the other bays, a cornice with dentils, three main entrance doors at the chamfered corner of the building, and a rear wing, containing an auditorium, behind the chamfered corner of the building, immediately inside the main entrance. The building also features two lower additions to the north and east, built in 2004, which are clad in compatible exterior materials, and feature exteriors with postmodern interpretations of the original building’s architecture. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1992, and today, remains in use as an elementary school. |
