説明This remarkable, or maybe terrifying, beast was designed for VTOL experiments which would lead to the vaguely more conventional C.450 Coléoptère. The C.400 consisted of a vertically mounted Atar 101DV turbojet, producing some 6,200 pounds-force, mounted on a fragile looking undercarriage. It’s main purpose was to investigate control methods and overcome torque issues. The first C.400 was remotely piloted but this second example, the P2, was fitted with an ejection seat mounted directly on top of the engine. It first flew in May 1957 and was demonstrated at the Paris Air Show the following month. The final C.400, the P3, had an enclosed cockpit. The C.450 flew in May 1959 as a result of these trials, but sadly crashed on its ninth flight with the pilot being badly injured, despite ejecting and the project was cancelled as a result. The C.400 P2, now the only surviving example, is on display in the fascinating Prototypes Hall (Hall 7) at the Musée de l'air et de l'espace.Le Bourget Airport, Paris, France.12th July 2022
