説明 | Built in the 1790s and expanded to its present size in 1838 by carpenter Jeremiah Hollingshead, this Greek Revival-style house was home to Margaret Wright Paget, great grand-niece of George Washington, during the mid-19th Century. The house features a red flemish bond brick exterior, a five-bay front wing with a side-gable roof, a gabled rear ell, which is the original structure, six-over-six double-hung windows, decorative stone lintels, a cast iron balcony on the second floor of the front facade, large brick chimneys at the endwalls of the front wing of the house, brick corbeling at the base of the roof on the rear wing, and a front door in the central bay of the front facade with ionic columns and a transom, and several bricked-up bays on the rear-facing facades of the front and rear wing. The house, along with the nearby historic Heigold House, survived the 1937 Ohio River Flood, which devastated the surrounding neighborhood, and the 1953 urban renewal project that led to the destruction of the rest of the neighborhood. The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978. In 2021-2022, the house’s exterior was restored after decades of neglect, though it remains a vacant shell. |
