説明 | Built in 1769 by Louis Blanchette, the founder of St. Charles, renovated in 1788 by Pierre Choteau, and further renovated in 1850-1851, this former gristmill, later utilized as a wool mill, was also utilized as a Union Army prison during the Civil War, the home of the Meerschaum Pipe Company, and as a tomato canning facility, with the industrial operations drawing power from the water wheel on Blanchette Creek. The building was altered in the 20th Century, and was heavily damaged in a fire in 1966, but was restored to its circa 1851 appearance by preservationist Michael P. Maurer, with the building becoming home to a restaurant after the renovation. The building features a red brick exterior, twelve-over-twelve and six-over-six double-hung windows, a front gable wood shingle roof, a rough-hewn stone base, door bays at the central bays of the west facade, a two-story rear wing with a low-slope roof, and red brick additions to the east and south of the original structure. The building is a contributing structure in the St. Charles Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1970, and expanded to its present size in 1996, and today is home to the Schlafly Bankside Brewpub. |
