Then, Senator George Smathers embarks on a lengthy speech during which the camera pauses several times. President Kennedy opens his speech with several jocular remarks about the poor quality of Senator Smathers' political advice. Afterward, he quickly focuses on the Space Program and the positive impact it will have on Florida's educational institutions, technological industries, and economy. He mentions the Alliance for Progress program and commends Senator Smathers for his intuitive concern for Latin America in the 1950s.
