説明 | The church, built in flint with tiled roofs, dates from the twelfth century onwards, and has one of the three round towers in Sussex. There is a western tower, nave with north and south aisles with clerestory windows on the south side, chancel, and south porch. The round tower has a shingled octagonal spire with a large fish weathervane, added in 1882. There are six bells, three which were recast in 1713. The wooden shingles of the spire were replaced in 1980 with Canadian cedar. The nave is from the early twelfth century with a mid twelfth century north aisle which has a three bay arcade with rounded arches, the south aisle being added in the early thirteenth century. It was demolished probably in 1728, and a four bay south aisle was re-added in the restoration of 1882.The chancel was rebuilt in the early thirteenth century, and originally had north and south aisles which were later removed. The east end has a triple lancet window with oculus above. The restoration done in 1882 was by Philip Currey, and included a new south aisle and south porch, the clerestory windows, replacement of roof, the reinstatement of chancel arcades, and other repair works. There is a thirteenth century square font in green sandstone. The church has several stained-glass windows of interest, most were installed in 1882, and in the west window of the north aisle there is an abstract window from 1983.The churchyard contains an old decayed set of village stocks. |
