説明 | The church was possibly built on the site of a previous monastery, and dates from the fourteenth century onwards.The chancel was rebuilt in 1828, and the nave and aisles rebuilt and porch built in 1862. The tower was partly rebuilt in 1910.There is a fifteenth century tower of four stages with a parapet and corner gargoyles. It has a ship weathervane and three bellsThe nave has four bay arcades with octagonal piers, dating from the fourteenth century; the north ones are from the perpendicular period. The capitals on the south side have flowing foliage decoration, and on the north side there are demon heads with bell flowers, and heads with leaves growing out of their mouths.There are fifteenth century clerestory windows above.There is a tall fifteenth century tower arch, and a fourteenth century chancel arch with carved corbels of heads.The chancel is built from brick with "Victorianized" windows. The east window is clear glass.At the east end of the north aisle is a screen to the Lady Chapel, possibly derived from the original rood screen.There is a perpendicular octagonal font with tracery carved on the panels.Captain Matthew Flinders, who sailed round Australia, was married in the church in 1801. |
