説明Church of St. Mary, Molland Devonconsists of a mid 15c three stage tower, chancel & nave. The mid 15c north aisle, was remodelled in early 16c. The south porch is probably 16c / 17c It replaced an earlier building the advowson of which was given by in the 12c by William de Botreaux to Hartland Abbey. It was probably the size of the present nave and chancel, which survives in the south east part of the nave (coursed rubble masonry to left of porch) & the 12c font The tower has a clock and 4 bells (the tenor weighing 16 cwt.) two being medieval inscribed 'Santie Nichola ora pro nobis' with coats of arms & t'gif to sancta maradous' - of the others a treble dated 1562 inscribed 'Hic jacet Magister Johannes Cooke', twice backwards.. The early 16c north aisle arcade of 4-bays with piers with moulded bases, carved foliated capitals (each one different) are "buried" in the Georgian woodwork One at a very wonky angle ! www.flickr.com/gp/52219527@N00/12hQS100b3It is notable for its interior with mostly unchanged early 18c fixtures and fittings including extensive box pews and triple decker pulpit' www.flickr.com/gp/52219527@N00/0vk5Eh22K1 According to a datestone, the east wall of north aisle was rebuilt / refaced at that time. The church shares with Parracombe the distinction of retaining the complete chancel enclosure of the post-Reformation type The screen with early 20c folding gates and an open framework on either side, is surmounted by a plastered tympanum, completely filling the chancel opening' www.flickr.com/gp/52219527@N00/865RMNW4Z0Facing the nave are 2 large Commandment boards on either side of the Royal arms inscribed with the names of I. Mogridge, Churchwarden, and Rowlands, Painter, with the date 1808 all retaining ancient colour. Pre c 1550 these would have replaced a Doom or Last Judgement scene (the sole remaining remnant of the former medieval screen is still in situ in north aisle)There are some fragments of old heraldic stained glass in the east window of north aisle. The church was repaired in 1902 with the south and east walls of the chancel being refaced / rebuilt and aisle eaves raised. Roofs and windows were restored in 1935-9, by W.A. ForsythThe registers date: baptisms, 1541; marriages, 1538; burials, 1541.There are many monuments to the 17c & 18c Courtenay lords of the manor www.flickr.com/gp/52219527@N00/t85mk5P0HsThere is also a memorial to vicar Rev.
