説明 | Looking east down the mid 15c nave & north aisle of the notably unrestored interior with mostly early 18c fixtures and fittingsAll under a restored ceiled wagon roof to the nave and early 16c wagon roof over the aisle. It replaced an earlier building probably the size of the nave and chancel, which dated back to the 12c of which survives in the south east part of the nave (see coursed rubble masonry to left of porch). The church shares with Parracombe the distinction of retaining the complete chancel enclosure of the post-Reformation type The screen with early 20c folding gates and an open framework on either side, is surmounted by a plastered tympanum, completely filling the chancel opening' Facing the nave are 2 large Commandment boards on either side of the Royal arms inscribed with the names of I. Mogridge, Churchwarden, and Rowlands, Painter, with the date 1808 all retaining ancient colour. Pre c 1550 these would have replaced a Doom or Last Judgement scene (the sole remaining remnant of the former medieval screen is still in situ in north aisle)At the far east end between the nave & north aisle is the enclosed family pews of the Courtenay lords of the manor www.flickr.com/gp/52219527@N00/a1sB259210 - Church of St. Mary, Molland Devon |
