説明 | A cluster of irises (center foreground) in a prairie / wetland restoration area in Greenfield Park in West Allis, Wisconsin. The plant is probably a yellow flag iris (Iris pseudacorus), but it could also be one of the blue flag irises (Iris virginica or Iris versicolor). These iris species all occur in wetlands and shorelines in North America. If not in flower, they can be difficult to tell apart. The flowers easily allow Iris pseudacorus (with a yellow flower) to be distinguished from the blue flag irises (virginica / versicolor).Iris pseudacorus is native to Europe and western Asia, and is generally considered an invasive species in North America. In constrast, the blue flag irises (I. versicolor and I. virginica) are native to North America. Irises are in the Asparagales order and the Iridaceae family.Torrey's rush (Juncus torreyi) is growing on the left edge of the iris cluster. The yellow flowers in the background are mostly sweet coneflower (Rudbeckia subtomentosa). Photo taken early August 2023. Original key: IMG_6370 |
