| 説明 | A wide view of the Stone Arch Bridge crossing the Mississippi River just below St. Anthony Falls, photographed from the south bank near Mill Ruins Park with the downtown skyline gathering at the far end of the span. James J. Hill commissioned this bridge in 1883 to carry his Great Northern Railway across the river into downtown Minneapolis, and it opened in stages between 1883 and 1925 — a sweeping curve of twenty-three (originally) granite and limestone arches that made the practical case for Hill's railroad while incidentally producing one of the great pieces of nineteenth-century American civil engineering. The bridge served freight and passenger trains until 1978, sat unused for fifteen years, and was reopened in 1994 as a pedestrian and bicycle crossing — a conversion that has done more than almost any other infrastructure project to make the Minneapolis riverfront walkable. Visible in this composition: the limestone piers and segmental arches of the bridge itself, the contemporary steel truss replacement span installed in 1963 to allow river barge traffic (the one Hill-era arch removed and rebuilt to make a navigable channel), the Xcel Energy Riverside Generating Plant's twin stacks rising on the north bank in the middle distance, and the tangled summer foreground of the restored mill ruins prairie, where native plantings now occupy ground that was industrial rubble within living memory. The hazy summer sky flattens depth and unifies the whole composition under the same pale wash. |
