説明The Mill City Museum from the pedestrian street along the riverfront, photographed during what appears to be a community event with crowds moving along the former rail corridor that now serves as a public promenade. This is the single most architecturally legible site of Minneapolis's industrial history: the surviving limestone walls of the Washburn A Mill, gutted by a 1991 fire, were stabilized and incorporated by Meyer Scherer & Rockcastle into a new museum that opened in 2003. The strategy is what Italian architects call "il restauro critico" — critical restoration — and it depends on the visible juxtaposition of the original masonry against contemporary intervention. The exposed nineteenth-century limestone walls, with their bricked-up window openings and rough scars where floor structures once met the wall, are deliberately preserved as ruin; the glassy turquoise volume rising behind and the modern brick-and-window addition to the right are clearly new construction, with no attempt to disguise their date. The "Gold Medal Flour" sign atop the silos to the left is the iconic image of Minneapolis itself — the brand that made Cadwallader Washburn's company General Mills, and the visual anchor of every Mill District photograph ever taken. The dense crowd in the foreground (children, joggers, strollers, a bicyclist) registers what the riverfront has become: a public amenity that draws thousands daily to ground that was, until 1965, an active industrial zone closed to the public.
