説明St. James’s Park Underground Station, (District and Circle Lines), 19 August 2023.St. James’s station was opened by the Metropolitan District Railway (MDR) in December 1868 on completion of its line from Westminster to South Kensington, which ultimately was to form a component of the ‘Inner Circle’ service shared with the Metropolitan Railway (MR) which extended its lines from Paddington (Praed Street) to meet the MDR at South Kensington. The intention was that the Inner Circle connect all or most of London’s main line termini. Although the MDR began as a company closely associated with the MR and expected one day to merge with it, in fact the MR and MDR quite quickly fell out with each other and the MDR branded itself the District Railway (DR), although still legally the Metropolitan District Railway. The original DR station was rebuilt in the early 20th Century by one incorporated in a new HQ ‘Electric Railway House’ for the Underground Electric Railways of London (UERL), a holding company established in 1902 for the DR and several other underground companies. That in turn was replaced by a new HQ ’55 Broadway’ constructed in 1927-29 designed by Charles Holden, consultant architect to the UERL. It was influenced by American skyscrapers and used the highest quality materials with sculptures of the most celebrated artists of the day. It later became the HQ for the London Passenger Transport Board, the London Transport Executive and Transport for London. The building was the tallest office block in London when it opened. The station, which is one of the most unaltered on the network since its 1920’s modernisation, and 55 Broadway are listed Grade I.Pictured is the entrance on Petty France.
