説明 | Built in 1930, this Art Deco-style building was designed by Albert Kahn to house the headquarters of the S. S. Kresge Company, which later became known as Kmart. The building features a limestone-clad exterior with rectilinear piers, decorative sculptural reliefs on the facade, recessed stone spandrels, a standing seam metal mansard roof with terra cotta cresting, an E-shaped footprint, a granite base, bronze doors with decorative bronze screens on the transoms, and smaller window bays above the fourth floors with the change in the facade demarcated by belt coursing with dentils and metal railings at the central section of the building’s East facade. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979, and is a contributing structure in the Cass Park Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2005. The building housed the S. S. Kresge Company until 1972, when the company moved its offices to Troy, Michigan. Since that time, the building has housed the Detroit Institute of Technology, and has since become owned by Wayne State University, today housing offices for Wayne State University and various businesses associated with the Metropolitan Center for High Technology. |
