| 説明 | Built in 1996-2000 and expanded in 2009-2010, this Contemporary building was designed by Antoine Predock to serve as the Alumni Center for the University of Minnesota. The building features a distinctive sculptural volume on the south side of the building with narrow, angled, and wedge-shaped glass windows interrupting the stone panel-clad exterior in an abstract pattern, a reflecting pool in front of the facade, and a one-story wedge-shaped extended section of this volume with a storefront at the narrow end that allows natural light into the building’s lobby. The rear volumes of the building are simpler, with a lower rectangular volume and a taller volume with a shed roof, which are clad in metal panels with punched window openings, and large storefronts on the ground floor, with a narrow atrium between the lower volume and the sculptural southern volume featuring a glass roof and glass catwalks between spaces on the upper floors. Inside, the building’s sculptural southern volume features walls and ceilings clad in wooden boards with a terrazzo floor and a fountain surrounded by stone panels, terraces at varying levels, a wall at the face of the adjacent rectilinear volume with protruding rectilinear volumes and small window openings, which is clad in metal panels like the exterior of the building, and a brick facade, installed at an angle, which features stone trim, the university’s seal, an arched opening at the base, and sculptural reliefs, which was salvaged from the old University of Minnesota stadium and installed in the space to serve as the entrance to the Heritage Gallery. Other spaces within the building also feature triangular wooden panels and copper panel-clad walls, which mimics the character of the building’s exterior. The building is one of several excellent examples of Contemporary architecture on the University of Minnesota campus. |
