| 説明 | Built in 1952-1953 in Cloquet, Minnesota, this Modern Usonian-style house was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright for the Lindhom family, which owned a successful business in Cloquet, with Wright also designing a gas station for the family in Cloquet. The house’s name, Mäntylä, means “house among the pines,” a reference to the house’s original location in a grove of pine trees. The house stood in Cloquet until 2016, when it was threatened by encroaching commercial development, and had been on the market for eight years. The house was carefully dismantled in 2016, with each piece being cataloged, and moved to Polymath Park in Acme, Pennsylvania, where it was reconstructed exactly as it had originally appeared in Minnesota. The house, an example of Frank Lloyd Wright’s Usonian design philosophy, features swooping cantilevered shed and gabled rooflines with wide overhanging eaves, wooden and concrete cladding on the exterior, large glass walls facing the rear yard and rear terrace, smaller windows facing the driveway in the front with decorative wooden trim, a carport on the driveway side of the house, and a concrete block chimney that penetrates the roofline. The house’s interior features red concrete floors, wooden cabinets, a card table cabinet at the front entrance, a living room with a concrete block fireplace, built-in wooden bookshelves and upholstered wooden benches below the smaller windows, vaulted ceilings with lower bulkheads, built-in wooden tables, and built-in desks. The house today is open to public tours and overnight stays, which helps support the preservation of several notable pieces of Organic Modern architecture by Frank Lloyd Wright and those who had previously worked for him. |
