The crowd viewing the ruins after the fire which occurred on the eastern side of Queen Street in 1865. The building in the foreground (Patrick Brown's Tavern) was on the site of the present Pavilion Picture Theatre.Caption: Queensland's first volunteer camp. The first training camp of the Brisbane Volunteers was held at Sandgate at Easter, 1878. This photograph taken by 'the original' Thomas Mathewson (who is still in business in Queen Street), has been carefully preserved by Mr. E. A. Dyne, who was appointed battalion bugler for the camp.Caption: Eight little pigs. -A. F. Pilcher photo.Caption: The Barracouta in the Brisbane River in 1875. The Barracouta was the ship in which Prince Alfred, Duke of Edinburgh, travelled on his memorable visit to Australia, during which he was shot at in Sydney and wounded by the fanatic Farrell. The Barracouta anchored in the Garden Reach on January 21, 1875 and left again of February 6. This photograph, as well as the other two early-day pictures on this page, was kindly lent by Mr E. A. Dyne.Caption: Wombey, one of the Aboriginals who piloted the Burke and Wills exploring party on the Bulloo River He died on August 22. Mr. S. R.
