| 説明 | Built in 1929 and expanded multiple times, the Colonial Revival-style Shaker Square was designed by Philip L. Small, Inc. for the Van Sweringen brothers to serve as a shopping district on the west side of the planned suburban community of Shaker Heights, though the shopping center itself is located west of the municipal boundary in the Buckeye-Shaker of Cleveland. The shopping center features red brick cladding, six-over-six double-hung windows, cornices with dentils, limestone trim, hipped and gabled slate roofs, large storefront openings, doorways with fanlight transoms, doric pilasters, copper-roofed cupolas, broken pediments, circular oxeye windows, decorative sculptural reliefs featuring festoons, and Palladian windows. Around the center can be found a series of apartment buildings of varying sizes, also built around the same time, creating a pedestrian critical mass that helps keep the center viable despite the construction of newer, larger shopping centers further out in the suburbs. Shaker Square was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1976. The center today houses a supermarket, pharmacy, and movie theater, with multiple retail shops, office services, and restaurants being housed in various retail and commercial office lease spaces around the shopping center, as well as a light rail stop on the RTA Green Line and Blue Line on the west side of the square. |
