説明 | A relatively short-lived relic of the Victorian arms race, the high angle battery at Verne Quarry was constructed in around 1892 for the protection of Portland Harbour. High-angle batteries were conceived as a direct result of the thickening of warship side armour; no longer penetratable by conventional coastal artillery of the day. The softer upper decks of warships proved to be a vulnerable target for artillery, but sea-level, flat rajectory guns were unable to lob rounds high enough at short range to achieve a near vertical hit into the deck. High angle batteries provided this capability. With a range up to 10,000 yards, the 6, later reduced to 4, guns at Verne Quarry could traverse 360 degrees, effectively create a bubble of fire around both the west and eastern approaches to Portland and Weymouth harbours. The fort is in good condition and open all year, work is actively undertaken to limit the decay, but still graffiti and minor vandalism takes a lead in the battery's deterioration. Unique to high angle batteries, and present at Verne, is the small railway that was used to transport the ammunition from the magazines to barrel level for loading. A quaint system of rails. ramps and a turntable allowed for effective distribution of ammunition to the full complement of 6 guns. |
