説明 | Buckland Filleigh House was rebuilt c1810 in the neo-classical style to the designs of the architect James Green. for John Inglett Fortescue 1841 after a fire in 1798 destroyed the previous one. It stands in large grounds, next to the medieval church of St Mary & Holy Trinity Mentioned as " Bocheland" in the 1086 Domesday Survey, it was the 13th of the 99 holdings of Geoffrey de Montbray, Bishop of Coutances. His tenant was Drogo, who held several other manors from him. Previously It had been held by the Saxon Wulfeva.The manor became the inheritance of the de Filleigh family of Filleigh North Devon, - (Richard de Filleigh who had used his shield to save William the Conqueror from arrows on 3 occasions, was called Fortescue (Fort = Strong, Escue = Shield), On default of their male heirs, it went by marriage to the Denzell family of St Mawgan Cornwall.In 1454 Sir Martin Fortescue 1472, second son of Chief Justice Sir John Fortescue 1485 married the Denzell heiress Elizabeth. Mid 18c it went by marriage to the Spooners - then back to the Fortescues on default of a Spooner male heir - John Fortescue died unmarried in 1776 and it then went by the marriage of his sister Rebecca to the Ingletts who added the name Fortescue,c 1952 to 1956 it was a private boys boarding school. copyright Derek Harper CCL www.geograph.org.uk/photo/3604743 |
